Honorable Mention - Shelter Island Country Club
|
Shelter Island Country Club (a.k.a. Goat Hill) |
Im just noting this course because of the lack of options for public golf out east and my personal experience here. After a quick ferry to Shelter Island from Sag Harbor you are about 10 minutes out from this very local golf course. It's a 9 hole course that consists of a lot of blind shots which I personally was not a fan of. The best part about this course is the little club house pictured above. They offer a deal called a double bogey which is two beers of your choice and a bag of chips for $5. After golfing here I recommend hitting
Salt which is also on Shelter Island. Fire food and drinks with a dank view of some boats as it sits right on a dock.
5 - Poxabogue Golf Course
|
First Hole of Poxabogue Golf Course |
Poxabogue is located directly off of 27 in between Bridgehampton and East Hampton. This place has a big range and is great for a quick 9 holes. It has two par fours and seven par threes. One hole is a whopping 60 yards. Playing this course is a great way to work on your short game. It is generally kept in good condition but the one complaint I would have, is this course it attracts a lot of amateur golfers which I often find myself getting stuck behind them. All in all this course is a lot of fun if you are busy with weekend plans but need to get that hit of golf in as well. Also worth mentioning, the Barstool guys played here and dubbed it Shinnecock Jr. 😂
4 - The Woods at Cherry Creek
|
The Woods at Cherry Creek |
One of the three courses I discovered in Riverhead last summer (2019).
The Woods is number four because it's an eighteen hole course, it's cheap, and it is generally kept in good condition. This course feels more like a Westchester course than a Long Island course. It really is not a spectacular course, does not scream long island golf, but it is a nice track.
3 - Cherry Creek Golf Links
|
Cherry Creek Golf Links |
The better of the two at Cherry Creek, it is directly across from the Woods.
Cherry Creek Golf Links is another one where it feels like more of a Westchester course than Long Island course. This place has a nice little bar and grill for you to grab food and beers at the turn. Another cool thing worth mentioning about this course is that it has a par 6. Pretty peculiar but I thought it was fun.
2 - The Vineyards

The Vineyards hole 9 |
The Vineyards is awesome. Probably my favorite course on Long Island I have played. The clubhouse locker room and bar are all huge and relatively new. The course is semi-private so it has members but is open to the public as well. This course features no trees but a lot of fescue. The course is kept in very good condition and has some very scorable holes as it is not a long course as it is a par 70.
1 - Montauk Downs State Park
|
Montauk Downs Hole 10 |
If your out this far on the island, you have to play the downs. It is by far the best golf experience you can get on Long Island. As a New York resident you get a significant discount as it is a State Park.
The downs has a extensive pro shop, a small grille filled with all the essential food items, a range, and a putting green. The Course itself was redesigned by the world famous golf course designer Robert Trent Jones Sr. in the 1960s. This course is beautiful, challenging, and affordable. I highly recommend trying to get out there if you have the chance. My only tip would be to try and play during the week if you can as it is very crowded on the weekends while in season and rounds can be prolonged for this reason. If you are lucky enough to get out there look out for the equipment man, he's a wild card.
